Forklift attachments expand the capability of your materials-handling fleet, enabling efficient handling of loads that are awkward or unsafe on standard forks, or generally make your employees' lives easier. Typical site needs include fork extensions for long or irregular loads, bulk-bag carriers, brick and block handling, tipping skips, sweepers/gritters, and work access platforms. Match each attachment’s Safe Working Load (SWL) and geometry to the truck’s residual capacity at the stated load centre, and confirm fork-pocket size, heel depth and securing method (heel pins/retaining straps) against your fork section.

Practical Use Tips

  • Plan the lift: define load weight, COG, route, ground conditions and exclusion zones; appoint a competent person.
  • Deration matters: any outreach (e.g., platforms/jibs) rapidly reduces capacity; never exceed the attachment position’s stated SWL.
  • People at height: non-integrated work platforms on forklifts are for exceptional tasks only when safer alternatives aren’t reasonably practicable; follow PM28 setup, restraint and supervision requirements.
  • Inspection cadence: carry out pre-use checks; ensure thorough examination at prescribed intervals (see below). Keep certificates accessible on site where they can be accessed quickly and easily (and updated as required).

Selection & Compatibility

Check pocket centres vs fork spacing, overall length/overhang limits for extensions, and attachment mass (it reduces residual capacity). For jibs and platforms, verify the attachment’s load chart and required rigging (hooks, shackles, slings) are rated and compatible.

Operations & Housekeeping

Auto-locking skips and bin lifters minimise manual handling; mechanical/hydraulic sweepers improve cycle times before finishing trades. Maintain clear sightlines, segregate pedestrians, and keep personnel clear of suspended loads.

UK Compliance (LOLER/PUWER)

Lifting with non-integral attachments is subject to LOLER: operations must be properly planned by a competent person, appropriately supervised, and carried out safely; lifting equipment and accessories require thorough examination at prescribed intervals (typically 12 months, or 6 months when lifting persons or for lifting accessories). PUWER applies to the safe selection, inspection, and maintenance of work equipment and operator competence. See HSE guidance and the LOLER ACOP for full requirements.
