The Birtley HD70 heavy duty cavity lintel supports masonry above openings in cavity walls with a nominal 70mm cavity, a 100mm outer leaf and a 100mm inner leaf. Choose from 14 lengths between 900mm and 4800mm, with load ratings that vary according to lintel length.
Manufactured from structural-grade steel, the HD70 is hot-dip galvanised after fabrication using Birtley’s Supergalv process. Factory-fitted insulation and a plaster key to the inner leaf form part of the standard specification.

Installation requirements
- Provide a minimum of 150mm end bearing at each end.
- Bed the lintel fully on bricklaying mortar.
- Provide solid, fully jointed blockwork infill to the inner leaf, as required by Birtley.
- Use a cavity tray for external wall installations.
- Follow Birtley’s installation guidance and the project’s structural specification.
Choosing your lintel length
The selected lintel must accommodate the clear opening and the required bearing at both ends. For example, a 1200mm lintel allows a 900mm clear opening with 150mm bearing at each end, subject to the loading and construction requirements being satisfied.

Frequently asked questions
Does every HD70 length have the same load capacity?
No. Birtley’s published UDL rating varies with length, from 70kN for the shorter lengths listed here to 35kN for the 4500mm and 4800mm options. Use the rating for your selected length and confirm suitability for the project’s loading arrangement.
Is the weight shown per metre or per lintel?
The table gives nominal weight per metre. To estimate the total lintel weight, multiply this figure by the length in metres. For example, a 2400mm HD70 at 12.5kg/m has a nominal weight of 30kg.
Does the HD70 need a cavity tray?
Yes. Birtley specifies a cavity tray for external wall installations.
