L Shaped Lintels (Angle Lintels)

L-shaped lintels, also known as angle lintels or angle iron lintels, are designed to support masonry above openings in single-leaf brick or block walls. The steel angle profile provides a simple and effective method of supporting brickwork where a full cavity lintel is not required. At Wade Building Supplies we stock L-shaped steel lintels from leading UK manufacturers including Birtley, Stressline and Catnic, available in a range of lengths to suit common masonry spans.

What is an L-Shaped Lintel?

An L-shaped lintel is a structural steel angle used to support masonry above an opening such as a window, door or service opening in a wall. Because of their simple profile, these lintels are commonly referred to as angle lintels or angle iron lintels.

The horizontal leg of the angle supports the masonry above the opening, while the vertical leg provides strength and stability. These lintels are typically manufactured from structural grade steel and protected with galvanised coatings to improve durability in external wall applications.

Manufacturers such as Birtley, Stressline and Catnic produce L-shaped lintels designed for use in brickwork and blockwork construction, with different lengths available to accommodate a range of structural spans.

Where L-Shaped Lintels Are Used

L-shaped lintels are typically used where simple structural support is required for masonry, particularly in:

  • External solid brick or block walls
  • Supporting the outer leaf of a cavity wall
  • Small to medium openings in domestic construction
  • Residential and light commercial projects

Because these lintels support a single masonry leaf, they are generally specified where a dedicated cavity lintel is not required.

Installation and Structural Considerations

Steel angle lintels should always be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidance. During construction, lintels are normally temporarily propped while masonry is being built above the opening to prevent twisting or deflection before the load is fully distributed.

Correct bearing lengths, wall type and loading conditions should always be considered when selecting a lintel.
