Restraint straps are used to connect structural elements such as roof and floor construction back to masonry, helping provide the required restraint against movement and uplift. Depending on the installation, they are also commonly referred to as wall straps, wall plate straps or roof straps.

Choosing the right restraint strap
The correct strap depends on the structural detail being restrained, the required length and the way the strap connects the timber and masonry. The required duty and fixing arrangement should therefore be established before choosing a strap based on length alone.
Light Heavy Duty straps
Expamet Light Heavy Duty restraint straps provide horizontal restraint for suitable roof and floor construction. Wade currently stocks pre-bent galvanised versions in several lengths with a 100mm bend.
Expamet Heavy Duty straps provide horizontal restraint for roof and floor structures, with Wade stocking a broad range of lengths in straight, 100mm bend and 150mm bend configurations.
The required configuration depends on the construction detail. Straight straps are suitable where the restraint detail requires a continuous flat strap, while bent straps provide a pre-formed return for connections where the strap needs to change direction around the construction.

Wall plate straps and roof straps
Wall plate strap, wall strap and roof strap are commonly used names for restraint straps when describing where they are installed. The product itself should still be selected according to its structural function and the specified restraint detail rather than the application name alone.
At roof level, restraint straps can form part of the connection between the roof structure and supporting masonry. Similar restraint principles apply at floor level where floor construction needs to be tied back to the wall.
Sliding head restraints
Wade also stocks an Expamet stainless steel sliding head restraint within this collection. Unlike conventional restraint straps, this is a specialist masonry connector designed to provide shear restraint at the head of a non-loadbearing wall while allowing differential vertical movement between the masonry and the structure above.
