Start by checking the width and depth of the supported joist and select a hanger designed for that timber section. The hanger also needs to be suitable for the required load, supporting material and connection arrangement.
Joist hangers for floors, ceilings and roof construction
Joist hangers are widely used for timber floor and ceiling construction and can also form part of suitable roof and timber-framing connections. The appropriate hanger depends on how the supported member meets the surrounding structure, rather than whether it is simply described as a joist, rafter or other timber member.
For engineered roof trusses or other specified structural connections, use the hanger, truss connector or fixing detailed by the designer rather than substituting a general-purpose joist hanger.
Galvanised joist hangers
